4. Masque
Masque is a form of theatrical performance which incorporates dance, costume, written verse and music into an impressive spectacle. First popularised during the 16th century at royal courts and aristocratic homes, its popularity increased over time as it often included allegorical or classical themes meant to glorify their noble or royal sponsors.
Ben Jonson is often credited with revolutionizing the masque as a literary form by adding more poetic elements. He famously added classic references and Petrarchan sonnets into his performances that made them more familiar to their audiences. Ben also developed anti-masques which added comic or grotesque characters that served as foils against its main masque (Orgel 76).
After the 17th century, masques were less frequently performed due to English composers’ increasing focus on creating more authentically English musical forms; nonetheless there were still occasional masque scenes like in Henry Purcell’s Acis and Galatea.
